East New York Farms! Celebrates 10 Years

Join East New York Farms! to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the East New York Farmers Market on Saturday September 20, 2008, from 9 am – 5pm. East New York Farms! will hold its Anniversary party in conjunction with the Greenthumb Harvest Festival.  There will be musical performances, a vegetable competition, games for kids, garden tours, a cooking competition, free ice cream and other give-aways and the freshest local produce at the best prices. East New York Farms! has a lot to celebrate! The market began in 1998 with one dedicated gardener, Johanna Willins, selling some surplus produce from a table on the sidewalk. Building on the commitment of vision of  community members, the farm has grown to operate the one of the largest community-run farmers markets in the country. More than 50 local gardeners have grown over 60,000 pounds of fresh organic food right in East New York. Over 100 young people have participated in paid internships offering agricultural training, leadership development, and social justice education. The event will be on New Lots Avenue between Hendrix and Barbey Streets. You can take the #3 train to Van Siclen, the B15 bus, or the B83.  See you there!
