Author Saru Jayaraman will discuss her new book, Behind he Kitchen Door. Her work blends personal narrative and investigative journalism to reveal the political, economic and moral implications of dining out. It tells the stories of restaurant laborers who toil under discriminatory practices, out and out exploitation, and unsanitary kitchens: a tale of the 10 million people, many immigrants, many people of color who need to raise their living standards in the nation's second-largest private sector workforce.
Saru Jayaraman is cofounder and codirector of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United and director of the Food Labor Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley. The reading and book discussion is free and open to all. We hope to see you there.
